JUMP-START

No one wants to start their day with a dead battery but thankfully you do not need to deal with it yourself. Contact STARR Towing for our Jump-Start service.

Signs to Look for in a Failing Battery.

Weak or slow start of the ignition, your lights will not turn on, engine not starting, age of the battery.

What Causes a Battery to go Bad?

AGE

Chemical Aging

  • Irreversible Reactions: The chemical reactions within a battery are not entirely reversible, leading to a gradual buildup of unusable materials or loss of active components over time.
  • Electrode Changes: Deposits can form on electrodes, such as lead sulfate in lead-acid batteries or metallic lithium in lithium-ion batteries, reducing the available chemicals for power generation.

Cycling

  • Each time a battery is charged and discharged it experiences stress, which contributes to a process called capacity fade.
  • Deeper discharges and higher charge rates can accelerate this degradation.

Environmental

  • Temperature: Both extreme heat and cold can accelerate battery degradation. High temperatures can cause the electrolyte to break down and speed up harmful chemical reactions.
  • Time: Even when not in use a battery naturally degrades over time due to slow, internal chemical reactions.

BAD ALTERNATOR

Undercharging

  • Deep Discharge: With insufficient power from the alternator the battery has to handle the entire load of the car's electrical system. This deep discharge is harmful to a lead acid battery, reducing its ability to hold a charge and leads to failure.
  • Sulfation: Constant deep discharges can cause sulfation, a condition where lead sulfate crystals accumulate on the battery plates, effectively killing its ability to recharge.

Overcharging

  • Electrolyte Loss: Excessive voltage boil the battery's electrolytes, leading to significant damage.
  • Cell Failure and Explosion Risk: Overcharging can damage the battery cells causing them to fail. in severe cases, it can even lead to the battery bulging or exploding posing a significant hazard.

Parasitic Draw:

  • A failing alternator can also cause a parasitic draw which acts like a small drain on the battery, slowly depleting it, even when the car is off.
